The Importance of Family Photos

Many months ago, I wrote a post about preparing a chemotherapy package for a loved one. What I didn't mention at the time, that the reason I put it together was that my father in law had just been diagnosed with cancer.

As the months went on, I remembered that my in laws had talked about wanting to have some family photos done. It didn't end up happening at the time, but in the summer I spoke with my mother in law to see if she wanted to do them now.

With our situation, I was hesitant to ask anyone directly (didn't want to put them on the spot). We needed someone that could be flexible with the date because if anyone had the sniffles, or if my father in law wasn't up to it, we would need to cancel.

I put out our situation in a facebook group, and Kristin from Mondays with Mac photography reached out, and said she would be happy to work with us. We scheduled 2 dates with her, hoping that if we had to cancel the first one, we would be able to make the 2nd one work.  This turned out to be a good idea, because we had to cancel the first one. A few days before the 2nd session, my son was sick and I was worried we might have to cancel it as well. She ended up getting in touch with me, because her schedule changed and she had an opening on the following Sunday evening.  That worked perfectly, as it gave us an extra few days to fight off the bug.

We ended up doing the photos in my in laws backyard. There were many different combinations (the kids and us, the kids and their grandparents, the kids alone, together etc etc).

Kristin was very easy to work with, she managed to get some real, true smiles out of my children (which is pretty rare), and made the whole thing seem very easy.

(She did such a great job capturing my children in photo. Mr. K has eyes that are like windows into his soul. They come from my father. I noticed the first time he opened them, it was like looking into my fathers eyes. That itself was emotional, because he had been gone for so long by the time that Mr. K was born.)

I will admit, there were times where I got a little teary and emotional, when it hit me WHY we were getting the pictures done, but I managed to get through it. So my advice to you is to just do it. Don't wait. Take the photos when you have a chance. Get in front of the camera (you hear this all the time, and it is so true). You may not like how you look in photos, but your children, spouse, siblings etc will treasure them in years to come.  If you have the money to hire a photographer for a family session - book it. Get the multi-generational photos now, because you may not have a chance to do it later.

So remember - take the photos, make the memories....you never know when your loved ones will be missing.

This is NOT a sponsored post. We happily paid for the
photography session and prints that we received.

  3. I know family pictures are especially important when there are grandparents involved as we never know when our time is up and I am always telling my mother this , she hardly likes her picture taken and I am always saying that the grandchildren will have better memories if they have the photos to remind them :( I tried to add them to youtube as well however my daughter and the kids dad dont want them up and neither does my dad :(
