As much as I am a home body and couch potato, I don't want my children to be. I feel that the best way to ensure that they stay active is to do things together. The more they see us doing it, they more they will (hopefully) want to continue themselves.
It can be difficult to get moving in the winter - it is cold, and snowy/icy outside, and it is really easy to fall into the trap of staying inside (which is ok sometimes). Fresh air is so important though, and I find that getting the boys physically active inside can be difficult (sure, they run the "circuit" of our main floor, and they rough house and we have dance parties - but they tire of them or someone gets hurt).
A few years ago, hubby built a sled run in our front yard, and it has become one of our favorite activities. Even on really cold days (-25 to -30) we will try and get out for 15 - 20 minutes (we just bundle up really well).
Asides from sledding, there are many other outdoor activities to take part in to stay active in the winter months; check out these ideas below from other bloggers:
- Walking
- Skiing or snowboarding
- Skating
- Snow Shoeing
- Shovelling snow
- Building a snowfort or snowmen/having a snowball fight
- Winter Campfire
- Painting the snow (fill a spray bottle with water and a small amount of washable paint)
- Geocaching (submitted by a Lindsay T. on our facebook page)
- Watching wind storms blow logs around the beach is a favorite activity of Anne from Victoria
What are your favorite winter activities?
