Kellogg's recently sent me a wonderful red box filled with all kinds of goodies! What was inside?
- an apron with the Treats for Toys logo
- 1 Box of Rice Krispies Cereal
- 1 bag of Marshmallows
- cute collectors tin robot toy
- sprinkles, smarties, icing and other treats for decorating
Everything we needed to make a pan of rice krispies squares to turn into toy treats! One of my absolute favorite things to do with the boys is be in the kitchen creating. I want them to have a love and appreciation for food, and I think part of that stems from them learning to make it themselves.
Rice Krispies squares are a super easy treat to make together, and now that Mr. K is 3, he actually gets to help out a little more (a bonus for him, his brother was in school so he got to be my only helper with the making aspect). We set to work gathering all of our ingredients to make the squares:
- 6 cups rice krispies (* I use 5.5, I like mine a little chewier)
- 250g marshmallows
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
Next, I greased a 9*13" pan
Step 1: Melt your butter in a large pot over medium heat
Step 2: add in marshmallows
- continue stirring so they don't stick to the bottom/sides of pot
Step 3: add in vanilla (it will sizzle a bit) stir it into melted marshmallows
Step 4: remove from heat and pour in the cereal
Step 5: mix it all together well
Step 6: transfer to your prepared pan (I use the spoon to drop it in, then I grease a plastic sandwich baggie, with my hand on the inside I quickly press down the mixture into the pan
You will need to leave them to set - which will take approximately 2 hours.
Once set, you can get to work cutting out shapes for whatever you want to make (we made a car and a dinosaur, but you could do anything you wanted)
After they are cut out, "glue" the pieces together with royal icing and decorate as you (or the kids) want! Super easy and fun activity to do with the kids on a cold or rainy afternoon!
Once you are done, upload the photo to Ricekrispies.ca (between October 1 and December 22 2013) and Kellogg's will donate $20.00 to the Salvation Army (up to $30,000) and they will use the money to buy toys for children this Christmas.

This is such a fantastic cause. I love that Kelloggs is helping to raise money for the Salvation Army so that some children will not have to be disappointed on Christmas morning.

ReplyDeleteWe love rice krispies here too! My daughters eat those for breakfast nearly every day and we often make rice krispies treats. I love this fundraising idea - we might have to do it! :) Thanks for sharing.
