Mr. J And The Dislocated Toe

Last night the kids and their dad were horsing around. All of a sudden, Mr. J crawled away with a very strange look on his face. I knew immediately something was wrong, and then came the tears.  He was holding onto his foot, and when I manage to have a look, I saw that it was his toe that was the issue.  It was crooked.

We were pretty sure he had broken it based on the look of it. I know they don't generally do much about broken toes, but I really didn't want his toe to heal like that, so we decided to get it checked out. Unfortunately, because of the time, we had to head to emerge. I would have preferred to see our own doctor - I dislike going to emergency when it's not a true emergency.  With the amount of pain he was in though, it couldn't wait until morning.

(there is a photo in the whole post, so if you are squeamish don't continue reading)

The nurse at triage told me we made the right call by coming in, that it definitely needed medical attention.  It was actually a really quick wait, less than 10 minutes after walking in the door, we were triaged, registered and in an exam room.  A few minutes later, the doctor came in and he had a look.  The toe was dislocated. My poor kiddo - the pain of putting it back was awful. Almost immediately afterwards though, he was back to normal.

Since we were there, the doctor wanted to x-ray it just to make sure it wasn't fractured. We were really lucky with another super quick wait, and when the doctor came back to see us said there was no fracture.

He wanted us to tape the toe to the next one just to protect it (apparently once you have an injury, it is extremely likely that re-injury will occur if you don't protect the area).

Our total visit was about 55 minutes. I had no idea that it was even possible to dislocate a toe.
