A Drive On A Bridge

Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge
It's really interesting to see what simple things make kids happy.  Growing up, when my dad would drive us to his parents house for a visit, we would go one of two ways.  Either over "the big bridge" or over "the little bridges".

It was pretty much the same amount of time to get there, but we always loved that we got to drive over a bridge (or two).

A few years ago, construction started on a bridge to connect Barrhaven and Riverside South.  We had driven past a few times on our way to visit friends, and the boys always asked about it.  I told them when it was open, I would take them for a drive over it.

It happened to open the weekend prior to the anniversary of my fathers death , and we always go to the graveyard on that day.  The morning of, we picked up my mom and made the drive over the bridge.

The kids were pretty excited, and it was nice to see the bridge finally completed!

When we arrived at the graveyard, they headed straight to the water pump (they love that they can pump the water up from the river) and then headed over to water the plants at the grave.

Do you ever take drives places to show your kids?

  1. When driving my grandkids every time we went under a bridge, they would "duck" put their head down so not to bang it

  2. Love driving to different spots in my attempt to de-technologify (yep it's a word) my kids.

  3. Driving with your kids any where should be educational en-route if you can manage, make up some games to keep them interested in their surroundings

  6. We are losing one of our beautiful bridges here in Victoria. It holds so many memories for me from my childhood; especially the noise it makes when you drive over. That noise takes me right back to being in my family's rambler, with my mom and dad, brother and sister!

  7. I'm always pointing out things of interest when I drive my granddaughter places. Not sure if she's terribly interested, but every now and then she'll point out to me a place I've shown her before!
So sorry for the loss of your father. How wonderful to include your boys in paying tribute by watering the flowers at the grave.

  9. We try to take the scenic route to new places when we can. Seeing horses seems to be a current favourite.
