Michael Hingson's parents felt much the same way, although Mike is blind. It never stopped him from playing games, learning to ride a bike - he even drove a vehicle around his college campus. Mike was allowed to learn his way around just like his brother did.
Eventually, Mike started using a cane and then he was paired up with a guide dog. Over the years, he has had a few different dogs. When he was working at the World Trade Center, Roselle was his guide dog. With Roselle at his side, he was able to escape the towers after the planes hit on 9/11.
Running With Roselle tells the story of Mike and Roselle; switching back and forth between him growing up and Roselle growing up and eventually the 2 of them meeting. I really enjoyed reading the book and reading what it was like for Mike growing up, and learning more about the process it takes for guide dogs to be paired up with their human companions.
Sounds like a fascinating book. I'd love to know more about the process of finding a guide dog match. Such an important partnership.
