Not what I want my kids seeing

Last night, I was watching the 6pm news - and Julien was playing with his cars. A set of commercials comes on, and Julien looks up and starts watching. The commercial was advertising the new Charlie Sheen show that is coming this fall. Does it have anything to do with the show? not really. This particular commercial shows him standing on train tracks, getting hit by a train and walking away unscathed (well, he has some dirt or soot on his face, but that's about it) and he says "everyone deserves a 24th chance". Julien thought it was SO COOL that the man got hit by a train and didn't get hurt.

That is NOT what I want my children seeing. As parents, we teach our children NOT to play on/near railway lines because they are VERY dangerous. We teach them to look both ways before crossing a street, and when they are really young they need to hold our hands.

Yet at 6pm, when most children are awake, there is a commercial showing this? Not impressed AT ALL. I have written to CTV asking at the very least they move the commercial to after 9pm, if not remove it completely.

As a mom, I don't shelter my kids too much in terms of the type of shows/movies they watch. We make sure to talk about the things they are seeing, and there are times we will have him close his eyes until a scene is over, or we will fast forward.  But this upsets me - and I made sure to tell him when it was over that it was not a REAL train collision, just a fake one on tv - but it still bothers me that he had the chance to see it.

If you object to the commercial as I do, I urge you to write to them also.

  1. That's really early for them to air a commercial like that! I know exactly what you mean though, I've seen many things during the day or early at night that I definitely do not want my kids seeing :S

  2. I do agree ... there have been some commercials about his new show that I feel should not be aired until after 8pm so that my child doesn't have to see it.

  3. Charlie Sheen should just go away! You are a good momma to know what your child is watching. Plus you were there to explain it was not real. Kudos!

  4. Yikes! That is totally not acceptable! Good for you to write them, they need to know it.

I cringe when I watch TV channels with commercials, but you just never know what is going to pop up. So thankful that most kids' channels don't have many (or at least more age appropriate) and for PVRs where we can just skip them!

  5. O...M...G!! That is absolutely stupid. I'm so glad we don't have cable anymore.

But yes, i agree w shannon above, so good that you were there to say 'WOAH NOW! That isn't REAL!!"

  6. WOW! All I can say is WOW!

I agree with Shannon too. :) I have friends who have 7 children from ages 2 to 13. They keep a tight reign on what their kids watch. I remember I had the eldest over for 2 weeks of the Summer and I was watching "Friends". She told me, "My parents don't let me watch Friends. Actually, they don't want us watching anything 'bad'!"

It was then that I realized how inappropriate certain shows and commercials are for kids.

  7. Mostly I wish Charlie Sheen decides to retire. Nothing constructive has ever come from his mouth. As for commercials I KNOW! I'm appalled at what's being run during the Olympics. I have children who we're encouraging to take interest in the sports and the patriotism of supporting our country but there have been some gruesome commercials on.

  8. OH I KNOW!! I actually have problems with all of the Charlie Sheen show commercials these days and they are all on right in prime time!! We were watching the Olympics and his show was being advertised and it was a series of shots of him & women talking about sex. Not exactly what I want my 5, 8 & 10 year old kids watching in between Olympic diving. Sheesh.

  10. Haven't seen that commercial yet but certainly is not what I'd call appropriate! Ridiculous! They know kids watch this stuff. Unbelievable

  11. I saw that commercial too. With the exception of watching the Olympics over the past couple of weeks, when my daughter is around and the TV is on it's on Treehouse. Not just because it's a great station but because there are no commercials at all.
