Do as I say, not as I do....

I have never been a big fan of this. I know that it was the "old" way of parenting, but it isn't for me. HOWEVER, how do you tell your kids not to do something that you do.....I have a really bad habit of biting my fingers (the skin around my nails etc) it's horrible - I have done it for as long as I can remember; when I am really bored, or nervous - lots of the time I am not even aware that I do it.

Julien does it now too. How do I get him to stop, when it is something I am often not aware I am doing myself? He will pull the skin off and have sore fingers because of it, sometimes even bleeding.

I don't want him to end up 31 years old and still having this nervous habit. I guess it really isn't all that much different than biting your nails, but still - how can I help him to stop?

  1. I am a nail biter too, and it is one of the things I worry about him picking it up too. Not really sure how to handle it other then trying to break the habit myself.

  2. Sadly, I think breaking the habit might be your best bet. It's a problem a lot of parents face though, so you're not alone!

  4. I don't have any advice. I am a nail picker. I bite occasionally, but I bit them bad as a kid. but I am always picking at my nails and skin around them. And you can tell by looking at my thumb nails, they are wavy and bent up.

    Thanks for stopping by SASS.

  5. My daughter went through a nail biting habit for quite a while. We threatened to put on that yucky tasting stuff and just the threat of it stopped the habit - that and a lot of nagging! It's hard when we have bad habits that we don't want our children to inherit! Good luck.

    Thanks for participating in SASS!

  7. I wish I could help, but I have a 3 yr old who chews her nails and I can get her to stop. Nagging and lecturing hasnt worked so I am almost going to resort to the icky nail stuff. Good luck.
