End of Summer Cottage Fun

(Tales of Mommyhood received the below mentioned products in exchange for being featured on the blog. Opinion belongs to Tales of Mommyhood, your experience/opinion may vary)

Every summer we try and make it to my aunt and uncles cottage in Golden Lake. We normally go up and spend the day, and come home after supper.  We did not have a chance to get there in June or July, and August was coming to an end. Last week, when we went to the beach, the kids were asking me about it, so I got in touch with my aunt to see if we could come for a visit.

Summer Week 9

Well, this is it - the final summer update. I am quite surprised at how fast this summer vacation flew by, although I know that I say that every year. As the kids get older, it seems to go by quicker and quicker.

Hubby was off this week; he took them for their back to school hair cuts at the beginning of the week, Mr. K turned 8, there were some epic nerf battles (with hubby and Mr. K, me and Mr. K, Mr. K and a friend), hubby got a brand new truck, Mr. K and I had some special errands to run on Thursday (one of them buying his cub scout uniform), and Mr. J and hubby went golfing. We had our annual visit to the Carp Custom Creamery for ice cream, and are finishing up by spending some time at my aunt and uncles cottage today.

As the kids get older, it is even more apparent to me how important it is to spend time together as a family. Playing board games, going for ice cream, seeing a movie, bike rides etc. It's not always about what interests us as parents, but spending time doing things that the kids like, even if it's not something we particularly enjoy.

School starts back in a couple of days, and while I am looking forward to having a bit more routine, it's just one year closer to them growing up and leaving home.  I am happy that they are growing and maturing, and seeing the changes makes me smile, but it's something that is bittersweet. They will always be my "babies", and I will always want to snuggle them and hold them like when they were young, but they don't seem to want that anymore.

Mr. K Turns 8!

Mr. K turned 8 years old earlier in the week. We had a birthday party on the weekend with a few of his friends (nerf fight, pizza and a pinata). On his actual birthday, the 4 of us went to see a movie, and then out to dinner.

Summer Week 8

Week 8 is over, and we are heading into our very last week of Summer vacation. It was our first week with no soccer for the kids, which meant we could actually go out and not have to worry about being home to get ready.

Beach Day!

Summer is almost over, and with soccer taking up so much of our time in July and early August, I wanted to make sure we made the most of the last 2 weeks of summer. We headed to Brockville at the beginning of last week, and I planned a beach day with some friends for later in the week.

Summer Fun Day Trip

This summer has been so busy with camps and soccer, that we didn't really have time to do a lot of fun stuff. We swam, the kids played with friends (Mr. K had a number of nerf fights over the last 8 weeks), there were sleepovers, and lots of time with grandparents.  With school starting back after Labour Day, I wanted to make sure we got in at least one fun day trip.

Summer Week 7

Wow - only 2 weeks left of summer vacation for us, and then back to school.  Week 7, the kids were in a multi-sport camp at a local golf club. They did archery, tennis, volleyball, basketball and ball hockey, as well as swimming every day and some other small activities in between.  It is by far one of the best camps they have ever done, and they are super excited and wanting to go back next year as well.

Summer Week 6

It's a little difficult for me to believe that we have actually had 6 weeks of summer vacation already. The time just seems to be flying by. Both kids were home with me this week, although Mr. J went for a sleepover at my brothers one night.

Summer 2018 Reading List Update

A few months ago, I wrote about my 2018 reading list - a list of books I was hoping to read before the year finished.  I updated it in February, but then kind of forgot about it - until this week.  The ones that are struck out are the ones that I have read this year.

Summer Week 5

Last week Mr. J was in another soccer camp. This one was a representative camp (competitive); he is planning on trying out for rep next season, and this was a good glimpse of what the competition is like.  He really enjoyed it, but was he ever exhausted. There was a huge difference between the two weeks - it was very apparent they worked them much harder.

Welcome To #BloggersFete 2018 #giveaway

Today is the day! The start of #BloggersFete. A few years ago, I joined with a group of Canadian bloggers to throw a big party in celebration of our individual blogs anniversaries. We had so much fun, we decided to make it an annual event.

This is our FOURTH year! A few of the bloggers have changed over the years, but we are all Canadian, and all very appreciative of our readers.

Summer Week 4

This was an interesting week. The kids were both in day camps. Mr. J was attending a soccer camp that is run by the soccer club he plays for, and Mr. K was in a biking camp. Both camps spend the majority of their time outdoors.

Of course, after no rain in the last few weeks, and super hot temperatures - this week was when we got hit with the a rainy week. Monday was overcast, and not much rain during the day (but huge downpour in the evening and over night), Tuesday saw some rain in the afternoon, and wednesday rained almost the entire day.

Thursday was absolutely beautiful.

Despite the rain, the kids enjoyed their camps. Mr. K has done the bike camp the last 2 summers (2 weeks each summer), and I am sure if I signed him up again he would happily go back. It's pretty much the highlight for him each summer.

Mr. J has done PD day camps with the soccer club before, but never a full week. I was a little concerned that he would be done with soccer after playing all day, and then having a game Monday night, and practice Wednesday - but he wasn't. He has been called up a few times to U12 games, which are Tuesday nights - and this week was no exception. He was happy to go, and the coach even asked him to come to their practice last night.

He has another week of soccer camp next week as well, hopefully he loves it just as much.

I spent a lot of the week getting things ready for #BloggersFete. We kickoff August 1st with a twitter party, so there has been a lot of behind the scenes stuff to get ready for that.

I also went and saw Mamma Mia 2 with my mom and brother earlier in the week.  On Thursday I went to visit my cousin who just had her second child, and got to have some brand new baby snuggles, and some playtime with her 2 year old.

#BloggersFete 2018 Sponsor Spotlight

For the last few years, I have joined together with other bloggers and put on the #BloggersFete event. This is our FOURTH year for the online party, and we are so thrilled to be doing it again.  The event would not be successful without the help of our kind and generous sponsors, that each year offer up prizes for our readers and #BloggersFete participants.

Family Game Time Fun #BloggersFete

My kids and I love to play board games and card games. We have the usual family games that you will see in most homes, but sometimes it's nice to try something new.

I was recently sent a box of games from Asmodee Canada for us to test out and have fun with.  Mr. J was away at my brothers, so Mr. K and I opened it up and had some fun. We played Go Cuckoo and Timeline that afternoon.

Summer Week 3

This week got off to a rough start. Week 2 had Mr. J away at summer camp, and Mr. K alone with us all week. Within 2 minutes of being together on Saturday, the kids were already fighting. Thankfully, saturday had them separated for most of the day.

Sunday we went to watch the final game of the World Cup, and then Mr. K spent the afternoon with his dad, and Mr. J spent the afternoon with his grandparents.

Summer Week 2

Our second week of summer was quite peaceful. Mr. J left for a week of sleepover camp on Monday morning. I took Mr. K and my niece swimming that afternoon, and then home for dinner and some play time.

Mr. K and I went to an indoor play center with my cousin and her 2 year old on Tuesday, and spent the afternoon with friends by their pool.

Summer Fun With PlaSmart #BloggersFete

Watermelon Ball

If you spend time in a pool over summer vacation, you are going to want to get your hands on The Watermelon Ball. It's a fun ball that you can use in water - it sinks to the bottom, and then floats to the top.

A PlaSmart product, the Watermelon Ball comes in two sizes (the original, and the watermelon jr) and provides lots of fun while playing in the pool.  You can bounce it, throw it, kick it and more.  Mr. K really likes to make up games with it for points (although, somehow it always works out in his favour).

Dreaming Of A New Kitchen

When we first moved into our home (way back in 2004), I was in love with it. After living here for 14 years, I have come to want some changes made, especially in the kitchen. We are lucky, and have a large area to work with. Our kitchen has it's preparation area, and then an eating area to the side - which is separated by a counter. We changed the colour of the walls last fall; went from white to orange. It made it a little better.

We would like to make it one large area, instead of the separate eating area (we rarely used it to eat in, more when the kids were small for lunch than anything else). We want to remove the counter that splits the kitchen, add a large island into the middle, and then extend the cupboards all the way down the length of the kitchen.

Summer Week 1

The first week of summer has just finished, and it went pretty well. Hubby was off for the week, so we had lots of time together as a family.

We hosted a bbq on Canada Day, spent lots of time at the pool (this was big for the kids, because they really like it when their dad comes with us - he plays more than I do).

Mr. J turned 11 on the 4th, so we went to see Jurassic World, and then out for dinner - he requested Red Lobster. He has been wanting to go for a while, so we finally made it.

Summer 2018 Is Almost Here

I can't believe how fast this school year has gone by. It seems like just a short while ago the kids were off on their first day of grade 2 and grade 5. Once again, we were lucky that they had great teachers.  This summer is creeping up very fast.  Normally, we make a list of all the things we want to do and places we want to go over the summer.  I haven't had the chance to do that yet, but I will tell you that we will be spending an awful lot of time swimming again.  This will be the 3rd year in a row that we are purchasing a swim membership - and I can't wait to spend time in the sunshine.

Mr. J will be off to sleep away camp with his cousin again this year, and then they are both doing a week of camp in July (one at a soccer camp, and the other biking camp) and in August they will be doing a multi-sports camp at a local golf course.

Back in September, Mr. K had an appointment in Renfrew. It was a pretty hot day, so on our way home we stopped at a beach for a short visit and to dip our feet in the lake. He really enjoyed it, so I told both the kids that we would go back there this summer and spend the day.

We won't be going away, and have nothing big planned, but I hope that we can spend lots of time outside, swimming, biking and hopefully getting along.

What about you - any big plans for summer vacation?
