Last Minute Gift Ideas From Goliath Games/Pressman Toy

I grew up playing board games with my family, and have continued to do so with my own children. My niece will come over and play them with us as well, it's something we really enjoy.

Most years at Christmas we add a board game to our collection. They are fun and you can find some that are pretty educational.

Goliath Games/Pressman Toys has some great options. They have something for every age group. This year, they sent me a selection of games (some of which we already own and love - Mastermind and Rummikub), and some that were new to me (Sequence, Make 7 an SMATH) There is a bit of a twist though. We didn't keep the games. We gifted them to the school my kids attend.

I brought them in and gave them to the principal, and she was so thrilled. They are a great way to keep the students entertained and occupied when inclement weather calls for indoor recess, and also a way for kids to spend time if they finish their work early. Our school also has a games club that meets at lunch time once a week, so they have the option of using them for that as well.

A lot of families send in gifts to teachers at this time of year, if you are looking for something a bit different, you could pick up one of the games to drop off.

Now for the fun stuff - they are offering up a package of 2 games for me to giveaway to one lucky Tales of Mommyhood fan! The pack will consist of Mastermind and Sequence.

To enter, complete the form below. This giveaway is open to Canadian residents that are 18+. Good luck!

Kitchen Gadgets From Hamilton Beach

This year, when it comes to gift giving, if you have someone that is hard to buy for, consider gifting them a new gadget for their kitchen.  I actually love when my hubby buys me stuff like this because they aren't things I will go out and spend money on myself.  Sometimes it's time for an upgrade, but because our current one still functions sporadically, I don't want to buy a new one yet....even though it's frustrating to use.

Hamilton Beach has some great items you can add for your consideration.

For the baker in your life, a good hand mixer is definitely a MUST HAVE

Hamilton Beach® Professional 5 Speed Hand Mixer

MSRP: $39.99

Looking to bake up a storm over the holidays or shopping for a baker? This ergonomically designed hand mixer features a powerful, lightweight motor, and five-speed settings - including a slow starting speed to prevent splatters. The swivel cord makes this mixer easy for left or right handeduse, and the snap-on storage case keeps beaters, whisk and other attachments in one place.

or for the smoothie or shake lover in your life, the All Metal Drink Mixer is a great option

Hamilton Beach® Professional All-Metal Drink Mixer

MSRP: $159.99

Mix things up this year with Hamilton Beach’s Professional Series Drink Mixer - it’s perfect for indulgent or healthier options! With a tilting mixing head, 100 watts of power, and a 2-speed motor, this mixer is ideal for creating protein shakes, fruit smoothies, omelettes, and scrambled eggs.

and for the adventurous coffee lover in your life, if they are up for trying something a bit different, you can always get them the Cold Brew Pitcher

Hamilton Beach® Cold Brew Pitcher

MSRP: $29.99

Start Saturday morning with a refreshingly cold version of a hot favourite! Hamilton Beach’s Cold Brew Pitcher is a great gift idea for the early-riser. This new product allows one to enjoy less acidic, smooth tasting cold brew coffee. Just fill the carafe with water, add coarsely ground coffee to the infuser, add the lid and shake the pitcher before placing in the refrigerator overnight.

For me, Christmas came a little early when I found the Easy Reach Convection Toaster Oven under my tree! We were in desperate need of a toaster oven. Ours had been on the fritz for almost a year. Sometimes it would toast, and other times it wouldn't. You could not toast anything back to back...it needed a good amount of time in between to cool down or your second batch would come out as warm bread.

(it's not as large as the box itself, it will fit on your counter)
The Easy-Reach Convection Toaster Oven has certainly come in handy over the last little bit. It's nice to put something in, and come back to it done exactly how we want it. Also, it has a 6 slice capacity for bread, which means I can make breakfast for both the boys and myself at once.  It's slightly larger than our old one, but it still fits perfectly on the counter.

This one come with a removable tray - which is a MUST (in my eyes) for easy cleaning. It just pulls out from the front and you can dump the crumbs into your compost.
I was so thrilled with the removable tray; I used to have to lift up my old toaster oven to empty
As you can probably tell, I am a wee bit happy with my new toaster oven....yes, I do get excited over items like this. Anything that makes my mornings easier, I am all for.  What is your favourite kitchen gadget?

Cake decorating is a hobby that I have loved since I was a little girl. When I was 9 years old, I remember decorating my first cake, all by myself. Before that, my mom would help me.  I made many in my teens, and absolutely could not wait to have kids - so that I could make their birthday cakes.  I don't sell them, but if a friend or family member asks me to make one, then I will for them.

Get Cash Back on Christmas Purchases!

This post contains affiliate links. If you sign up Tales of Mommyhood will receive a small commission. This is not a sponsored post. All opinions belong to ToM and yours may vary.

Like many others, I do a lot of online shopping. I still get out and support small, local businesses. However, when it comes to certain items, there are particular stores I like to shop at. Sometimes going in person isn't convenient, and online shopping works well for that. When I shop online, the first thing I do is go to the ebates website. From there, I check to see if the store I am purchasing from qualifies for cash back, and if it does, then I follow that link. Sites like Amazon, Old Navy and Chapters - plus many others.

It's as simple as that. Sign up for an ebates account, check there first before going to the website. Any qualified purchases will get you cash back in your account! It's not a lot, but every bit adds up. I have been using the website for a few years, and it is completely legit. When you get to a certain threshold, money is deposited into your bank account.

It's a simple, convenient way to *save* a little bit of money.

The Importance of Family Photos

photo credit: Mondays With Mac Photography

Many months ago, I wrote a post about preparing a chemotherapy package for a loved one. What I didn't mention at the time, that the reason I put it together was that my father in law had just been diagnosed with cancer.

As the months went on, I remembered that my in laws had talked about wanting to have some family photos done. It didn't end up happening at the time, but in the summer I spoke with my mother in law to see if she wanted to do them now.

Introducing Kids To The World Of Blogging

When I started blogging, I never thought it would take me to where we are today. I didn't even think anyone would read the blog outside of my family and a few close friends.  Fast forward 10 years - and I was asked to be a guest speaker in a class.

Mr. J's teacher had a project in mind for his grade 5/6 class this year, and asked for my feedback on it. He wanted the class to have a blog, with the kids being the authors of it.  Along with Chris from Canadian Dad, I went in a couple of weeks ago to talk to the kids about the world of blogging. How Tales of Mommyhood started, opportunities that have arisen because of the blog and to answer questions that they may have.

North Star Award

Last year, Mr. K joined Beavers. He started a little bit late, but he knew one of the other kids, and 2 of the scouters. He really enjoyed the activities that they did (participating in the Santa Claus parade, fun at the meetings, hikes, museum tours etc).

Happy Thanksgiving 2018

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians. I hope that at some point over the weekend you were able to enjoy a nice meal with family and friends.

Yesterday, hubby and I took the kids apple picking and out for breakfast. It was a little bit chilly at the orchard, but it didn't stop us from enjoying it. We had some nice family time while searching for the best apples on the trees, and then picked up the most delicious apple cider donuts at the end. It's actually the highlight of our apple picking adventures every year.

We went to my aunts house for dinner, it was a lovely meal and I always enjoy our family time together.

Tomato Basil Topping Recipe

recipe, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, basil, appetizer, dip

Each spring, I plant a vegetable garden in my backyard. Every year I plant cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and green peppers, and this year I added some green bean plants.  Most of my garden finished early in September, but I just finished harvesting my tomatoes last weekend.

Child Passenger Safety Week

I think that as parents, we can all agree that our children's safety is a top priority, and we will do as much as we can to keep them safe. One of the ways we keep them safe everyday, is to make sure that when they are a passenger in a vehicle, they are using the proper restraint.

That might mean that they are rear facing, or they are in a high back booster seat until they have met the height and weight requirements to not need one.  Another way we can ensure children are as safe as possible in a vehicle, is to keep them in the back seat until they are 13 years old.  Even if you have a large 10 year old, they are still safest in the back seat. It has nothing to do with size, but with their bone development.

Mr. J was rear facing until 15 months, but when I had Mr. K the recommendation was 2 years. Even though he screamed through almost every car ride, I kept him rear facing knowing that he was safest that way (I won't lie though, I was absolutely thrilled when I turned him forward and the screaming stopped).

Something that not all parents know, is that car seats and booster seats should be replaced, even if your vehicle is involved in a low speed crash and the seats don't look damaged. With this week being Child Passenger Safety Week, Carstar and Evenflo want you to be aware of the need to replace the seats, read below for more information.

REPLACE YOUR CHILD SAFETY SEAT AFTER A CRASH TO ENSURE CHILDREN ARE PROTECTED ON THE ROAD

Even Low Speed Crashes Can Cause Car Seat Damage, Reduce Protection and Performance in Future Crashes

"HAMILTON, ON (September 21, 2018)– Child car seats are designed to protect children during a crash, but do you know how to ensure that car seat is safe AFTER the crash?
While most drivers immediately plan to repair or replace the vehicle after the crash, they don’t always consider that the forces that damaged their car also could have damaged their child’s car seat or booster seat.
According to Transport Canada, parents should dispose of their child seat or booster seat if the child car seat was in a vehicle during a crash. Even if the child car seat was empty or was not directly hit, it may have been damaged.

CARSTAR and Evenflo have teamed up for Child Passenger Safety Week to educate parents and caregiversabout car seat replacement after a crash.

“As a mother of twin boys, you always want to make sure your children are protected in the car,” said Shannon Spake, Fox Sports host who covers football, basketball and motorsports. “When your car is involved in a crash, it’s just as important that you take care of your car seat or booster seat as it is to address the car damage. CARSTAR and Evenflo want to make sure parents everywhere are aware of the potential need to replace their car seat or booster seat after a crash.”

“CARSTAR is committed to repairing accident damage and getting families back on the road in a safe vehicle, and the child safety seat is a major part of that vehicle’s safety system,” said Dean Fisher, Chief Operating Officer for CARSTAR. “Any time you’re replacing sheet metal, bumpers, air bags and other safety systems, you’ve been in an accident hard enough to damage the car seat. It’s a cost that many insurance policies cover, so it’s always smart to replace the car seat and ensure your child is safe and protected on the road.”

Evenflo recommends that consumers contact their car seat manufacturer if they have questions about car seat replacement after a crash.

“Crash damage to a car seat or booster seat may not always be visible,” said Evenflo Safety Advocate Sarah Haverstick. “Damage can occur even if the child restraint is unoccupied during the crash. If a consumer has a question about whether their car seat should be replaced, it is important to contact their car seat manufacturer directly for guidance.”

Evenflo offers additional child passenger safety tips:
Make sure your child’s age, weight and height are within the requirements for any car seat you are considering for purchase
Check the Transport Canada guidance to help determine what type of car seat is appropriate for child’s size and development level
For help with car seat installation and use, contact your car seat manufacturer or find a certified child passenger safety technician near you

For more tips on driving and collision repair, visit www.carstar.com. CARSTAR Auto Body Repair Experts offers high-quality, reliable repair service in 35 states and 10 Canadian provinces. Just call 1-800-CARSTAR when you need a vehicle repair, and they will send a tow truck, contact your insurance company, arrange for a rental car and repair your car. Effects of a Tornado, and Realizing We Need To Be More Prepared

(photo taken by my husband a few months ago, not from September 21)
Living in the Ottawa area, I have always felt pretty safe in terms of natural disasters. The part of the city we live in isn't near water, so flooding isn't likely to happen. We get the odd earthquake, but nothing super big and damaging. There has been a random tornado warning over the years, but other than a little bit of high wind and hail, no touchdowns or real damage.

Until now. Last Friday, there were tornado warnings for our area. Late afternoon saw some pretty high winds and rain, and a tornado touched down just a bit North of us - 20 minute drive away. It was categorized as an EF-3, and it touched down in 3 areas (Kinburn, Dunrobin and Gatineau). A little while later, an EF-2 touched down about 15 minutes east of us.

Many areas of the city were without power for hours (some for less than 8, and others 48hours +). We were "lucky", and only out for about 22 hours. Other than some minor inconvenience, we were totally fine.

Seeing the footage of the areas hit by the tornadoes is heartbraking. Knowing that people lost their homes, vehicles, and pets. Hearing about the people that were hospitalized with injuries (thankfully, I haven't heard of any deaths yet, but there are some pretty serious injuries) - is absolutely devastating.

Many I have spoken with felt the same type of security as I did, and likely did not take the tornado warnings as seriously as we should have.

It has also made me realize just how important it is to be prepared.

We had lots of propane for the BBQ, so were able to make breakfast on the side burner Saturday morning, and boiled water for a neighbour so they could make tea.

We had lots of non-perishables that we could eat (crackers, bread, cereal, peanut butter, potatoes, rice). May not be the most nutritious meals, but food to keep us going. We made sure to not open the freezer, so that hopefully all the meat and food we had in it would stay frozen.  The fridge, we didn't open until the next morning, when we knew most items would have to be tossed anyways. Our eggs were still super cold, and the butter was still fine too.  We tossed the pepperoni, cheese and a few other items that we were worried about.

We were able to use our phones as flashlights, and since we had gas in our vehicles could power up to make sure we didn't lose charge.

What I do need though, is an emergency preparedness kit. I plan on putting together a small bin with flashlights, extra batteries, first aid kit, some bottled water (our water supply was fine, but depending on what happens, it might not be), blankets, matches or lighter).

If you want to contribute to those that have been affected by the recent events, you can donate to the redcross.

As hard as it is being without power (when we are so used to it), it really is just a minor, minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things. The hydro workers and first responders worked so hard this weekend to get things cleaned up and power restored. It does NOT go unnoticed or unappreciated. I am sure that their families were missing them, and also worried for their safety while they were trying to get things restored for the rest of the city.

End of Summer Cottage Fun

(Tales of Mommyhood received the below mentioned products in exchange for being featured on the blog. Opinion belongs to Tales of Mommyhood, your experience/opinion may vary)

Every summer we try and make it to my aunt and uncles cottage in Golden Lake. We normally go up and spend the day, and come home after supper.  We did not have a chance to get there in June or July, and August was coming to an end. Last week, when we went to the beach, the kids were asking me about it, so I got in touch with my aunt to see if we could come for a visit.

Summer Week 9

Well, this is it - the final summer update. I am quite surprised at how fast this summer vacation flew by, although I know that I say that every year. As the kids get older, it seems to go by quicker and quicker.

Hubby was off this week; he took them for their back to school hair cuts at the beginning of the week, Mr. K turned 8, there were some epic nerf battles (with hubby and Mr. K, me and Mr. K, Mr. K and a friend), hubby got a brand new truck, Mr. K and I had some special errands to run on Thursday (one of them buying his cub scout uniform), and Mr. J and hubby went golfing. We had our annual visit to the Carp Custom Creamery for ice cream, and are finishing up by spending some time at my aunt and uncles cottage today.

As the kids get older, it is even more apparent to me how important it is to spend time together as a family. Playing board games, going for ice cream, seeing a movie, bike rides etc. It's not always about what interests us as parents, but spending time doing things that the kids like, even if it's not something we particularly enjoy.

School starts back in a couple of days, and while I am looking forward to having a bit more routine, it's just one year closer to them growing up and leaving home.  I am happy that they are growing and maturing, and seeing the changes makes me smile, but it's something that is bittersweet. They will always be my "babies", and I will always want to snuggle them and hold them like when they were young, but they don't seem to want that anymore.

Mr. K Turns 8!

Mr. K turned 8 years old earlier in the week. We had a birthday party on the weekend with a few of his friends (nerf fight, pizza and a pinata). On his actual birthday, the 4 of us went to see a movie, and then out to dinner.

Summer Week 8

Week 8 is over, and we are heading into our very last week of Summer vacation. It was our first week with no soccer for the kids, which meant we could actually go out and not have to worry about being home to get ready.

Beach Day!

Summer is almost over, and with soccer taking up so much of our time in July and early August, I wanted to make sure we made the most of the last 2 weeks of summer. We headed to Brockville at the beginning of last week, and I planned a beach day with some friends for later in the week.

Summer Fun Day Trip

This summer has been so busy with camps and soccer, that we didn't really have time to do a lot of fun stuff. We swam, the kids played with friends (Mr. K had a number of nerf fights over the last 8 weeks), there were sleepovers, and lots of time with grandparents.  With school starting back after Labour Day, I wanted to make sure we got in at least one fun day trip.

Summer Week 7

Wow - only 2 weeks left of summer vacation for us, and then back to school.  Week 7, the kids were in a multi-sport camp at a local golf club. They did archery, tennis, volleyball, basketball and ball hockey, as well as swimming every day and some other small activities in between.  It is by far one of the best camps they have ever done, and they are super excited and wanting to go back next year as well.

Summer 2018 Reading List Update

A few months ago, I wrote about my 2018 reading list - a list of books I was hoping to read before the year finished.  I updated it in February, but then kind of forgot about it - until this week.  The ones that are struck out are the ones that I have read this year.

Summer Week 5

Last week Mr. J was in another soccer camp. This one was a representative camp (competitive); he is planning on trying out for rep next season, and this was a good glimpse of what the competition is like.  He really enjoyed it, but was he ever exhausted. There was a huge difference between the two weeks - it was very apparent they worked them much harder.

Welcome To #BloggersFete 2018 #giveaway

Today is the day! The start of #BloggersFete. A few years ago, I joined with a group of Canadian bloggers to throw a big party in celebration of our individual blogs anniversaries. We had so much fun, we decided to make it an annual event.

This is our FOURTH year! A few of the bloggers have changed over the years, but we are all Canadian, and all very appreciative of our readers.
