Kanata - My Home Town (Canucks Content Carnival)

Originally settled by Europeans in the 19th centuray, Kanata was mainly agricultural until the 1960's when Bill Teron purchased over 3000 acres of land and started developing it.  Kanata became a city in 1978, 2 years before I was born. My parents moved into the area of Glen Cairn when it was first being built, and lived there for 9 years before moving to another area of Kanata. I grew up and went to school here, and when it was time to move out, we purchased a house in another area of Kanata (hubby also grew up here)

Kanata had a hi-tech boom in the 1990's and there was an influx of residents around that time.  In 2001, Kanata (along with many other small communities) amalgamated with the city of Ottawa. We are now one of the largest suburbs of the area.

Kanata is home of the Canadian Tire Center, which is the home rink for the Ottawa Senators and welcomes many musicians and skating shows throughout each year; and also the Kanata Recreation Complex (2 skating rinks, and a number of rooms where recreation classes take place), which is home of the Kanata Stallions. Kanata Leisure Center offers and indoor wave pool as well as a fitness center; and the brand new Richcraft Center is another recreation complex with many features.

We have one small indoor shopping center (the Hazeldean Mall) and many strip malls.  There are a few hotels (including The Brookstreet). Many outdoor parks and skating rinks, baseball diamonds, soccer fields and basketball courts and a number of walking paths and nature trails. It's a great place to raise a family.

Taking the highway it's a short drive to downtown Ottawa which has many tourist attractions (Parliament Buildings, Byward Market, Rideau Center, Rideau Canal, NAC, National Art Gallery, Museum of Nature, War Museum and so much more)!

    1. Yes! They are the "Ottawa" senators, but even before we amalgamated the played at what (was) the paladium, then the corel center, then scotiabank place and now CTC!

  6. We had friends in Kanata and I have to say, I fell in love with that suburb. I think if we ever moved to Ottawa, that is where we would end up. Thanks for sharing the history, that was a bonus!

  11. It has been a long while since I last visited Ottawa, but it is a future plan to visit and show our children. It is nice to learn about the areas close by so that we can expand our itinerary to include them. After all our nations capital would not be the great place it is without the wonderful gems around it :-) Thank you for sharing so many wonderful bits of info about Kanata!
