Diaper Savings That Don't Stink

Becoming a parent is a life-changing event. The first time you set your eyes on your first baby, you instantly experience a bond that is like no other. Watching your child explore the world helps you to pay attention to things you might otherwise ignore. It’s exciting to watch a child figure out things for the first time that we adults take for granted. Children remind us that every day can be a miracle.

Of course, parenthood comes with a great deal of responsibility, too. A family budget needs to be set.Ideally, you will have planned out most of yourfamily budget before the baby arrives. However, there’s no question that you will be met with some expenses you haven’t anticipated.

Diapers are one of the larger expenses new parents encounter while their child is an infant. Even before your child is born, you will have been bombarded with numerous coupons and special offers from the diaper manufactures. You probably will have debated the cost of reusable cloth diapers versus disposable ones. You will hear arguments for both that seem to make sense from both an environmental and economic perspective.

If you are confused about how to best save money on diapers, consider the following suggestions:

Yes, Cloth Diapers Will Save You Money

The debate over the merits of cloth diapers versus disposable diapers will likely go on for decades. The truth is that cloth diapers will save you thousands of dollars as opposed to using disposable ones. Of course, this assumes that you aren’t using a diaper delivery service and are washing the diapers yourself. Even though you will have higher water and electricity bills, you will still come out better cost wise. Also, if you live in a sunny area, dry the diapers out in the sun; not only will you save money, but the diapers will have the smell of freshness only sun drying can provide.

It’s also more environmentally friendly to use cloth diapers. Some people will try to argue that the amount of energy you use washing and drying cloth diapers is worse for the environment than using disposable diapers. However, they forget to include the fact that the manufactures of the disposable diapers have to use just as much energy, if not more.

You may have also heard that it’s extremely difficult to get the “stink” out of a diaper. While that used to be true, today’s cloth diapers are made in such a way that they are much easier to clean. Bum Genius and Fuzzi Buns are two of the more popular brands, both of which have received overwhelmingly positive reviews from parents. If you decide to buy Bum Genius or Fuzzi Buns at a discount on sites like eBay, make sure you are getting the most current version of their diapers.

Abandon Brand Loyalty

Diaper manufactures use coupons and discounts to try to win you over as a loyal customer. Unless your baby noticeably prefers one brand of diaper, you can save a great deal of money by buying whatever brand of diaper is cheapest at the time. Scout out both local and online couponsweekly to get the best deals you can. If you have opted to use disposable diapers, this cost saving strategy is especially important.

Buy In Bulk
If you can afford to, buy diapers in bulk. You’re definitely going to need them, so why not save money by buying them in bulk? However, don’t buy in bulk through co-ops. Many people mistakenly think that they can save a great deal of money by buying diapers through a diaper co-op. However, once you add up all of the transaction fees, shipping and handling fees, and a tip for the co-op host, you almost always up doing worse than if you had bought them from your local bulk retail store.
