Sponsored Post: Never Say Dieting Oath

This post has been sponsored by Multi Grain Cheerios, however all opinions are honest and belong to Tales of Mommyhood. Your opinion may vary.

Watch the video below to see the wonderful message Silken Laumann has for her daughter, Kate. I am so thrilled to see this video - it makes me so happy to see women (women that our kids may look up to) talking about HEALTHY body image. Dieting is not healthy - Physically or emotionally. Eating properly, exercising, and taking care of yourself physically and emotionally - that is healthy.

Growing up, I struggled greatly with body image. I developed acne at a young age and wasn't comfortable with the physical changes my body was going through.  Everywhere I looked there were women talking about dieting; talking about needing to lose the baby weight or how they were unhappy with their body (they didn’t like their nose, or their breasts were too small/bum was too big or they were fat)

It was really hard to get away from it all.  Watching TV there were teenage girls taking diet pills to lose weight or starving themselves to be thin. The messages that we saw were that our bodies weren't good enough the way they were.  That we had to take drastic measures to change things so that we would be perfect.

It took a long time for me to be comfortable with my body. A very long time. I was worried before I had my children that I might end up hating myself after all of the changes pregnancy puts you through - but I don't.  I am still comfortable with my body. It is MY body. It doesn’t look like everyone else’s because it isn’t anyone elses. IT IS MINE!  The stretch marks on my stomach are from sheltering my children inside my body; protecting them for 36 and 40 weeks. The changes in my breasts are from nourishing their tiny bodies from my own. How could I hate that?

Wanting to get healthy – that I understand. Changing your lifestyle by adding in physical activity (or increasing it) and changing your eating habits to include healthier food choices is great. I love that she is sending such a positive message to her daughter.  Watch the video and let me know what you think.

I am taking the oath to leave the word "dieting" - what about you? Will you join me?

  4. I'm with you on this! 13 months ago I changed my lifestyle to include healthy eating and regular physical activity, which is not dieting at all. I lost 70 lbs and 4 sizes just by following common sense.

  6. I could never diet. I love food too much :) My daughters won't ever get the diet message from me, but I know they get it from society, so I'm always aware of the messages they're getting and we talk about it.

    1. that's awesome - it is so important that as parents, we are in touch with what are kids are seeing/hearing - and not just what they WANT us to know!

  7. YES! I absolutely agree and appreciate this post! This is so good for our daughters and the entire generation coming up! There has been too much emphasis on dieting - and I have been guilty of falling into the hype throughout my life! Yay healthy lifestyle!

  9. This is such a great lesson for not only daughters, but sons too. Kids of all ages and genders often feel the pressure and it's so important to send a positive message to them.

    1. I feel the same way! I have 2 boys, and I want them to grow up knowing that they are the way they are. They don't need to go to extreme's to change things.

  10. I hate the word diet. I have not used it in years and though I change the way I eat often, always trying to eat healthier and make better choices, I pledge not to ever use it again.

  11. I've had this discussion with my eldest daughter about dieting and body image. She's on the other side of the spectrum, tall and very slim, like I was when I was her age. I still tell her about the dangers of dieting, and that she is still growing,so she should not be worried about the calories she's taking in, but that she should be eating healthy foods, and some junk food in moderation. I also make sure she's active. I also let her know she's perfect the way she is!

  12. This is a wonderful pledge! I watch what I say around my son and daughters regarding diets and body image. I take my kids to the gym with me and only purchase whole foods in hopes of teaching them how to live a healthy lifestyle.

  14. I took the oath. I think it's important for kids to learn about healthy eating, not dieting.

  15. I come from a long line of family members with weight issues so I am very sensitive to this issue. I don't use the word "diet" with my kids. I say "healthy eating" :).

  16. I agree. Eating healthy food, in healthy amounts so that you feel good and are healthier is what it should be about - not trying to force your body to reach a specific number on the scale.
